There is a Chinese idiom which states:

Up above, we have paradise; down on earth,
we have Suzhou and Hangzhou.

Perhaps the most famous site in Hangzhou is the West Lake, which is a popular scenic vacation spot in China. The West Lake has been an important geographic icon throughout Chinese history, which is apparent from the numerous temples that have been built around its shore for 1,500 years.

In addition to the West Lake, there are numerous important cultural sites to see in Hangzhou as it is one of the seven ancient capitals of China. Hangzhou has also been the historic focal point of religious diversity in China. One can visit one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals and one of the oldest Islamic mosques in China.
