Academic Information
During the first four weeks of the Spanish Language & Latin American Culture program students will complete one 80 hour course per summer session. Most courses focus on Spanish language instruction, but there are also several courses designed for more advanced Spanish students. Summer 3 offers Spanish for Health Professionals which is available only to students who are majoring in one of the following areas: pre-med, nursing, pharmacy, microbiology, and other health professions. Classes are at Veritas University with American and other international students.

*Summer 1+Service Learning students can add a 1-credit conversation and culture course (Beginning, Intermediate or Advanced levels available) for an additional fee. Contact the Costa Rica Site Specialist for more information.

This program is open to Gap Year Students.

Service-Learning Information
During the final four weeks of the program, students will work 15-35 hours per week at a host organization, increasing language proficiency and gaining valuable international experience. Placements are arranged prior to arrival in the host country and language requirements may vary. Visit the ISA Service-Learning website for more information on placement opportunities.

Service-Learning placements are coordinated by ISA and have no affiliation with the university. Students will complete a Service-Learning Portfolio throughout the program, which consists of reflective assignments, group discussions, and logs of hours.

Students can earn 3 credits by completing a minimum of 90 hours at a host organization and through successful completion of the Service-Learning Portfolio. Visit the Academic Credit page of the ISA Service-Learning website for more information.

Minimum GPA

Students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.50.

Minimum Admissions Prerequisites

There is no language prerequisite for this program.

ISA Service-Learning placement eligibility is determined by a resume, cover letter and Spanish language interview upon application. Placements are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis and participants are encouraged to apply 3-5 months before the application deadline.

Mission Work

ISA's Veritas Christian Study Abroad division adds ministry service opportunities and spiritual support to existing ISA programs. Students interested in participating in missions while studying abroad must apply to a Veritas program (Visit to view program options). Veritas programs promote spiritual growth through the on-site support of a Mission Mentor as well as engaging academic and mission experiences.
