Getting Around Galway

One of the best ways to get around Galway is by foot. Students can easily walk from their housing to campus, the town center, and the waterfront. Walking is also a great way to explore Galway, discover restaurants, listen to live music and meet neighbors.

In addition to walking, students can easily use Galway's buses and taxis. Please read the descriptions below to learn more about these options.

Types of Transportation

Local Bus
Local bus service is provided by both Bus Eireann and City Direct. Bus tickets typically cost around 2 euros each and weekly and monthly passes are available. Click here to be redirected to the Bus Eireann website for route information. Click here for City Direct's route information.

In Galway, a taxi ride from one side of town to another costs 5-7 euros.

National Bus/Train

Students can easily reach all parts of Ireland by bus and train. Many bus companies, including Bus Eireann, City Link, and GoBus maintain routes with Dublin and other Irish cities. The bus station in Galway is a short walk from the town center. Ireland's rail company, Iarnród Eireann, also provides a fantastic service for those who wish to travel during their stay in Galway. Like the bus station, the rail station is within walking distance from Galway's town center.

Galway Airport is located just outside the city and acts as a launching pad for domestic flights. International flights leave from both Shannon Airport (1 ½ hours from Galway by bus) and Dublin Airport (3 ½ hours from Galway by bus).
