Semester / Trimester

Hispanic Studies

Universidad de Granada

Fall 3B 2018 + Service-Learning (Sep 20, 2018 to Dec 21, 2018)
Catalog Code: IGREF2218

This program offers Spanish language courses as well as a variety of Hispanic Studies courses at the high advanced level. Students will enroll in one required Spanish language courses at their respective language level and three to four additional electives taught in Spanish. Classmates are international students, the majority of whom are North American. All classes are taught by host university faculty at the Centro de Lenguas Modernas at the University of Granada.

What is the difference between the A and B programs?

  • The A program includes a month-long intensive Spanish language course. Fall and Year students who choose this option will start with an 80 hour intensive Spanish course, and Spring students will start with a 60 hour intensive Spanish course.
  • The B program does not include the month-long intensive Spanish language course. Students will be taking normally scheduled semester long courses.

If the placement exam indicates that the student's language level is too low for this program (Advanced Language Level or lower), the students will be required to switch to the Spanish Language, Culture and Electives program.

Please note that a student visa is required for programs over 90 days. Please reference the Student Visa & Embassy page for more information. Applying for a visa could require out of state travel.

Service-Learning Information
In addition to their academic courses, students will have the opportunity to spend 5-10 hours per week at a host organization, increasing language proficiency and gaining valuable international experience. Placements are arranged prior to arrival in the host country and language requirements vary. Visit the ISA Service-Learning website for more information on placement opportunities.

Service-Learning placements are coordinated by ISA and have no affiliation with the university. Students will develop a Portfolio throughout the program, documenting their projects, hours, and program activities.

Students can earn 1-6 credits based on the number of contact hours accrued at the host organization and successful completion of the Portfolio. Visit the Academic Credit page of the ISA Service-Learning website for more information.

Eligibility

Minimum GPA

Students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.50.

Minimum Admissions Prerequisites

For high advanced level Spanish speakers, and higher. Students must have completed a MINIMUM of 5 semesters, 8 quarters, or the equivalent of college-level Spanish.

IMPORTANT: Enrollment in the Hispanic Studies semester program is strictly determined by the results of an on-site placement exam administered by the University of Granada. We strongly suggest that students whose home universities require them to place into Hispanic Studies sign up for Fall/Spring A programs (rather than the equivalent B programs) so that, by taking a month-long intensive Spanish module before the start of semester classes, they may increase the likelihood of being eligible for the classes they need.
