Overview
USF Code: ARH 4571
This course is a broad overview of historical and contemporary cultural context, bridging diverse domains from religion and politics to architecture, music and popular culture. Students will largely be graded on their communicative performances during the sessions, analytical abilities, writing skills in addition to retention of essential information provided throughout the trimester. This course aims equally at bringing history and culture to bear upon contemporary global issues that frequently involve the Muslim and Arab World such as universal human rights, peace and conflict, cross cultural communication, and cultural critique. Among the major aims of the course is to enable students to develop a multi-disciplinary approach in the understanding and analysis of issues related to Islamic civilization, Muslim culture and artistic expression. Rather than being merely exposed to the latter subject matters, students will be initiated into developing deeper insights of the daily Moroccan cultural intricacies as well as Islam and art cohabitate. We will equally provide a space for insiders and outsiders understandings of Muslim Culture along with artistic perspectives.
