Overview

Course objective:
This course considers the three major monotheistic religions (Islam, Judaism and Christianity) in terms of their common historical origins, as well as their manifestations in today’s world, particularly vis-à-vis contemporary Morocco, a powerful example of a pluralistic, multi-ethnic, multi-religious society.
Course content:
We will begin by looking at the fundamentals of the three religions and how they have been transmitted (“the Book”) from their founding to the present. We will consider their concepts of God, their visions of the creation of the world, various dogmas they share as well as where/how they differ, the place of prayer in each, rites and rituals they have in common, as well as points of difference.
Course strategies:
Students will look at and compare essential texts from the foundations of the three religions. They will explore what the three have in common and what sets them apart from each other.
