Beginning Modern Standard Arabic II

Course Description:

This level is designed for students who can read and write the Arabic alphabet, construct basic sentences and are familiar with some basic vocabulary. Building on the basic foundation provided in Beginning Arabic 1, students learn how to introduce themselves and to conduct simple conversations on a range of everyday subjects. Students will learn to correctly use present, past and future tenses, along with more complex vocabulary and grammar.

Course Objectives:

This level will provide students the opportunity to:

• Expand their understanding of reading and pronouncing Arabic script
• Increase their conversational skills
• Broaden their knowledge of Arabic culture and traditions relating to family life and society in general
• Improve the confidence in his or her ability to guess the meaning of new words from context.
• Speak and to write about themselves, their families and their environment
• Compose complete sentences concerning their daily lives.
• Finish and understand chapters 3-7 of the Al-Kitaab book.

Method and Approach:

In this program we will follow chapters 3-7 of Al-Kitaab Part 1. Changes may be introduced if necessary.

The student will prepare the lessons at home, read vocabulary, do homework, practice exercises, listen to DVD dialogues, and write short sentences. Classroom work consists of further practice and clarification of the material.  Students will receive a weekly handout with vocabulary and dialogue regarding the topics. All handouts will relate to material covered in the Al-Kitaab chapters of each week. 

Examples of Class Activities:

-Listening to chapter’s stories on DVD.
-Reading & writing words and short sentences.
-Make a conversation with his classmates.
-Listening to songs with lyrics.
-Dictation.
-Creating short skits with classmates.
-Learning grammatical rules in context.

Our method for teaching Modern Standard Arabic for level beginning 2 is based on four principles skills: listening, speaking, writing and reading.

1. Al-Kitaab fi Ta'allum Al Arabiya with DVDs A Textbook for Beginning Arabic: Part One, Third Edition. By, Kristin Brustad, Mahmoud Al-Batal and Abbas Al-Tonsi
2. Arabic for English Speakers, Volume 1. By Madina Islamic University
3. Arabic for reading and speaking, Abdirashid A.Mahmud, Barron's.
4. A Dictionary of Modern Written Arabic. By, (Hans Wehr, Beirut, Librairie du Liban and London, MacDonald & Evans Ltd.)
5. Audio-video materials, texts from Arabic school, Internet, newspapers, Stories; magazines, DVDS; Cassette … etc.

The most of topics are aspired from textbook “Al-Kitaab (fiitacallum al- carabiyya” (لكتاب في تعلم العربية).  Beginning 2 is divided into 5 chapters (3-7).  All vocabulary and rules of grammar will be including in these topics.  One chapter is covered per week.
