Main Outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Discuss denaturalised notions of gender, kinship
- Explain key concepts--gender binary, heteronormativity, transgender/cisgender, gender identity, gender expression.
- Identify the cross-cultural variation of these forms of social relations through case studies
- Apply concepts and the knowledge acquired in class to daily life experiences.

- Introduction to Transgender Studies
- The forms of the South African “family” historically and in the present (nuclear family, migration, domestic work, adoption, reproduction, and new technologies)
- Ethnographies: different case studies on kinship across the continent and from South Africa
- Rethinking experiences of kinship and gender
