    Main Outcomes

    On completion of this module, students should be able to:

    • Discuss denaturalised notions of gender, kinship
    • Explain key concepts--gender binary, heteronormativity, transgender/cisgender, gender identity, gender expression.
    • Identify the cross-cultural variation of these forms of social relations through case studies
    • Apply concepts and the knowledge acquired in class to daily life experiences.

    • Introduction to the concepts of gender, kinship, and family 
    • Introduction to Transgender Studies
    • The forms of the South African “family” historically and in the present (nuclear family, migration, domestic work, adoption, reproduction, and new technologies)
    • Ethnographies: different case studies on kinship across the continent and from South Africa 
    • Rethinking experiences of kinship and gender
