On completion of this module students should be able to:
- Identify historical evidence
- Distinguish between different forms of evidence
- Evaluate the validity of historical evidence
- Show how evidence is used to construct an historical argument
- Use evidence to construct an historical argument
Main ContentThe course uses key debates on historical events that took place in Africa around 900 to 1900. It uses different case studies to:
• Show how historians back up their arguments by using
different forms of evidence,
• Discuss the usefulness or otherwise of different sources of
evidence for constructing precolonial African histories,
• Engage the constructions of precolonial African histories in
different forms and genres, such as oral narratives, literary texts and
visual technologies.
