    Course Content:

    This module provides students with a sound grasp of microeconomics when applied to
    strategic planning and decision making. In particular it addresses the central decision
    problems managers face and provides the economic analysis needed to guide these
    decisions. The course goes beyond the ?nuts and bolts? of economic analysis with the
    prime objective of showing how economic analysis is used by practicing managers.

    Topics covered include:

    Autumn Semester:
    ? Optimisation: the consumer and the firm;
    ? Basic production concepts; production functions; cost analysis and returns to
    scale.
    ? Risk and uncertainty;
    ? Making decisions, utility and its measurement
    ? Disequilibrium and decision making;
    ? Investment appraisal and capital budgeting- methodology project classification,
    investment decisions; sources of capital.
    ? Economic analysis of Auctions
    ? Economic co-ordination mechanisms;
    ? Pricing
    ? Innovation and Technological Change

    Spring Semester:
    ? The Market and Organisations
    ? Neoclassical Consumer Theory
    ? Behavioural consumer theory;
    ? Principle-agent theory;
    ? Transaction cost economics and the boundaries of the firm;
    ? Game theory

    Teaching: Lectures, seminars and practical laboratories

    STUDY OPTION 1:
