Overview
Course Content:
This module seeks to highlight the importance of examining sport and sport coaching
from a sociological and cultural perspective, and to introduce key concepts of sociological
and cultural studies and their relationship to sport. The module will also examine
theories, methodologies and technologies associated with sport coaching and
contemporary issues that are emerging within the sport and coaching environments.Topics covered may include:
? Examine socialisation in sport and its impact upon mass participation and
coaching in a number of different sports.
? Examine divisions in sport, with particular focus on gender, race, class and
sexuality. Divisions will be discussed in relation to participation, coaching and
supporter interaction with athletes to develop an understanding of current
trends in sport and why some populations are under-represented in sport.
? Examine sport as a global industry via its media representation and hyper-realism
now placed upon sport performance and sport coaches.
? Examine the commercialisation of sport and its impact upon sport, its performers
at all levels and coaching structures within a variety of sports.
? Examine current trends within coach development and their impact upon coach
education.
? Examine key factors related to continued participation in sport and sport
coaching and how NGBs can develop to enhance the longevity of athletes time in
a sport.
? Examine governmental developments and initiatives that have a direct impact
upon sport participation and coaching and how NGBs and NGOs must adapt to
these changes.
? Examine the impact of Higher Education on coach education and the coaching
