Overview
This module explores the politics of the modern Middle East, focusing on key themes that have shaped the region since the end of the colonial period. Attention is given to ideological trends in the Arab world, such as Arab nationalism and radical Islam, to ongoing violence and conflict in the region, to identity construction, and to areas of particular interest such as gender, human rights and relations between the Arab world and the West. Each theme will be illustrated by the use of case studies. Specific regions or states will also be examined in detail, such as Turkey, Iran, the Gulf, North Africa and Palestine/Israel.
