Overview
This module explores human rights discourse from its historical origins in natural law theory and egalitarian thought, through its classical liberal formulation as the ?rights of man?, the limited application of rights in the 18th century to white, propertied, men (and failed attempts to achieve greater inclusion), to current attempts to internationalise the idea of rights. Students explore why exclusions from full citizenship and human rights based on gender, ethnicity, class, and other social categories persist today; and discuss current debates, such as the tension between universalism and cultural difference.
