This module introduces students to a selection of pioneering thinkers whose writings and ideas have influenced the development of film studies. Designed as an accessible introduction to pre-1945 critical and theoretical writing on film and the cinema it examines the work of a range of writers in a social, cultural and historical context. The module is also designed to acquaint students with a number of different methodological approaches to the study of film and to promote an awareness of methodological self-reflexivity. In addition to its core academic activities the module will actively promote essay writing and group presentational skills.
