Overview
Assessment: essay (3000 - 3500 words) [60%], oral or practical presentation [40%] [an overall pass is required]
This newly created module examines popular and urban culture, investigating styles of dance that emerge on stage, screen, on the streets and in dance studios. Whilst focusing on dance, it also looks at music, film and related media. Sessions will include practical workshops as well as theoretical issues questioning the politics, power and economic factors that drive these styles and that influence their popularity and development. It sees popular dance as a shifting site rather than a given category that can be defined.
