Overview
Assessment: essay plan [required], essay (3000 words) [100%]
This module focusses on a number of issues arising from the study of John?s Gospel - the Fourth Gospel of the New Testament ? in the ancient and classical world and in contemporary scholarship. Central to the study of the Gospel is the textual content of the Gospel itself and a close reading of the evangelist. In this context we will explore how far the Gospel can be understood as an attempt to reconcile the divinity of Jesus of Nazareth with traditional Jewish monotheism involving the simultaneous rejection of (Hellenistic) polytheism.
