London’s Cityscape and London Life

Course overview
Summer School modules are designed to be intensive, intellectually-stimulating short courses. They are taught by King’s academics in academic disciplines where King's has expertise. Classes are very international with students from all around the globe learning together.
Each module is 150 study hours comprising intensive teaching, independent study and group work and is examined to university standards. Comparable to an in-semester 15-credit King’s undergraduate module and therefore typically awarded 3-4 US credits or 7.5 ECTS, many summer students ask their home institution to award them external credit for their King's summer module to use towards their degree programme when they return home.

What does this course cover?
London is in partnership with its citizens, ever changing to reflect their evolving needs and desires. The bowler hats may be long gone but the city still fascinates; maybe more so now than ever. This unique course walks you through the cityscape at street level and gives participants a deep understanding of how, now and over the last 2,000 years, this global city has always been adapting to the needs of its citizens and how London’s citizens shape the city.
The group will visit strikingly different areas of London to intellectually, emotionally and physically experience one of the world's greatest cities at work - making and remaking itself. We will explore urban futures and visions for how London will change to accommodate changing populations and climate needs. How do Londoners live in the city today? How does creativity, finance and migration shape the city? How are different needs contested? What does it mean to be at home in London? London invites participants of this course to come and find out first-hand.

What will I achieve?

Upon completion of the module students will have:

• Experienced London as a Londoner
• Understood the role of architecture and urban planning in a large city
• Explored key concepts in urban studies and citizenship studies;
• Understood what drives change in a city and how it is experienced;
• Discussed aesthetics, planning and access to the city and compare London with other world cities
• Explored walking and photography as methods of inquiry.
   

Who is this for?
The King's College London Undergraduate Summer School is open to students who are currently, or have been, enrolled in an undergraduate degree programme. We also welcome applications from professionals who have substantial relevant experience in their chosen subject area.

How will I be assessed?
Presentation: 20%
Reflective journal: 80%
