Prerequisite: NoneTheatre and performance studies have paid only limited attention to music as performance. However, in response to 'new musicology', in which the social, cultural and political dimensions of music making have emerged as legitimate fields of study alongside traditional forms of musicology, significant contemporary scholars have turned their attention to the performance of music. Recent work in the field includes studies of opera and musical theatre as theatre, the sociology of folk, rock and pop music, the theatricality of popular musical performance, the ethnography of the classical concert hall. This module aims to make this scholarship available to students of drama, and to engage students in a weekly programme of listening to and analysing musical performances.
