Overview
DESCRIPTION:
Computer communications systems components, models, operations, and applications; networking standards, protocols and connectivity aspects; operating systems fundamentals; problem solving, analysis, and implementation with a scripting language; top-down algorithm design; testing and debugging techniques; documentation; Database Management Systems concepts; data modelling; database design; normalization; Structured Query Language (SQL)RATIONALE:
The module is intended to provide students with the required theoretical and practical knowledge for the design and implementation of Database Management Systems. It exposes students to the fundamentals of logical and physical design of DBMSs. Moreover, the students are exposed to the fundamental concepts underlying an operating system with an emphasis on the networking aspect. The students are also introduced to structured computer programming with an emphasis on problem-solving strategies through the use of a scripting language. The module is suitable for students who aim for a career in Management Information Systems, as well as for those students who plan to pursue study and research in the areas of Management Science and Economics.LEARNING OUTCOMES:
As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to:
1. Distinguish the major components and functions of an Operating System with special emphasis on the networking component.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of programming principles by formulating algorithmic solutions to data management problems and by constructing simple programs using algorithms and basic data types and structures.
3. Design logical diagrams and develop a normalized database complying with the appropriate database rules, and implement database applications to solve data management problems.METHOD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING:
In congruence with the teaching and learning strategy of the college, the following tools are used:
• Lectures and class discussions. Laboratory sessions involving practice in simple program design and development, and in the design and development of databases.
• Office hours held by the instructor to provide further assistance to students.
• Use of the Blackboard Learning platform (communication, posting of lecture notes / assignments’ instructions / timely announcements, online submission of assignments, etc).
