  • Overview

    DESCRIPTION:
    Introduction to drawing the human figure. Posture, movement and characteristics of the human body in space. The students practice on quick sketching and on longer observation drawings.

    RATIONALE: 
    This course offers an in depth study of the measurements of the human body, the relationships of its parts and its dynamics through movement. Figure drawing forms a strong foundation for studies in the visual arts, and it enhances visual thinking.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES: 
    As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to:
    1. Develop competency in measuring and sketching the human figure.
    2. Evaluate theoretical and practical knowledge in order to compose the figure on the picture plane depending on its size and shape.
    3. Utilize axes, guiding lines and geometric forms in order to depict
    a figure’s movement in space.
    4. Identify the spaces, planes and volumes on the human figure.
    5. Discuss issues of identity through figure drawing.

    METHOD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING:
    In congruence with the teaching and learning strategy of the College, the following tools are used:
    - Classes consist of lectures, demonstrations, and problem solving sessions, class critiques and discussions.
    - Studios: students are encouraged to use studio facilities for the completion and installation of their works.
    - Media labs: students use media labs for the completion of projects and portfolios
    - Gallery and Museum visits
    - Office hours: students are encouraged to make full use of the office hours of their instructor, where they can ask questions and go over lecture and reading material.
    - Blackboard site, where instructors post lecture notes, 
    assignment instructions, timely announcements, as well as additional resources.
