Film Analysis

DESCRIPTION: 
Analysis through an examination of filmic elements such as form, narrative, sound, mise-en-scene and cinematography. Survey of different aesthetic styles and genres in the history of cinema.

RATIONALE: 
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the critical skills required to interpret and analyze films through a survey of different approaches. Focus is on the examination of the different aesthetic styles, visual techniques and formal and narrative elements that comprise the fundamentals of visual communication in film.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: 
As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to:
1. Understand the different frameworks utilized in the analysis and interpretation of films.
2. Distinguish between different aesthetic styles in film history.
3. Identify different film genres, their history and cultural significance.
4. Apply terminology and concepts relevant to film analysis.
5. Analyse and evaluate different levels of meaning, style and formal composition in films.

METHOD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING: 
In congruence with the learning and teaching strategy of the college, the following tools are used:
- Classes consist of lectures and class discussions.
- Film and video screenings.
- Office Hours: Students are encouraged to make full use of the office hours of their instructor, where they can ask questions and go over lecture material.
- Use of a Blackboard site where instructors post lecture notes, assignment instructions, announcements, and additional resources.
