Introduction to Theatre Practice

DESCRIPTION:
Exploration of a wide range of performance, directing and theatre making skills. Introduction to theatre practice through three fundamental perspectives: action, architecture, audience. Exploration of the relationship between making, performing and appreciating.

RATIONALE: 
The course offers a platform for students to bring together the knowledge gained in the foundational modules and gain practical experience of theatre as a collaborative art form. It aims to develop the students understanding of the relationship between Actor, Director and Audience and to enhance their ability to reflect on and articulate their practice via an understanding of key concepts, contexts and developments in a theatre environment.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: 
As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of concepts and contexts that shape theatre practice.
2. Show an understanding of the key conventions of the stage relevant to their work as actors, designers and directors.
3. Differentiate between various approaches to theatre making and performance practice.
4. Take part in self-assessment and group feedback, in order to develop a language to examine their practice and that of others.
5. Demonstrate professional skills in collaborative practice.

METHOD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING:
In congruence with the teaching and learning strategy of the college, the following tools are used:
- Workshops
- Lectures, directed discussions and presentations. Learning activities include videos of productions and slide presentations.
- Office hours: students are encouraged to make full use of instructor’s office hours for questions, to see their exams/papers, and/or go over lecture material.
- Use of Blackboard.
