Issues in Performance

DESCRIPTION:
The course explores topics, ideas and issues in the performance of music, drawing from a variety of periods, places, and sources. Students will engage in critical listening, score reading, examining, analysing and evaluating a range of musical sources.

RATIONALE: 
The course develops key skills such as critical listening, score reading, retrieving and processing information from primary and secondary sources. Students are encouraged to identify and discuss issues and ideas implementing academic conventions.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
After successfully completing this course students should be able to:
1. identify and discuss musical issues, utilizing information from a variety of appropriate sources.
2. select and utilize primary and secondary source materials including texts and scores, adhering to academic conventions.
3. examine and discuss a range of music examples.

METHOD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING:
In congruence with the teaching and learning strategy of the College, the following tools are used:
- Class lectures
- Student seminars
- Guided independent study
- Office hours: students are encouraged to make full use of their instructor’s office hours, where they can ask questions, see their assigned work results and/or go over lecture material
- Use of a learning management system (Blackboard) where instructors post lecture notes, assignment instructions, announcements and additional resources
- Support from the Student Academic Support Services (SASS), who offer one-to-one and group workshop sessions to support the development of academic and study skills
