Music Performance Workshop I

DESCRIPTION:
This workshop is focused on the development of practical solo and collaborative performance skills as well as creative and critical skills involved in rehearsing and preparing for a successful performance. Students perform, collaborate and critically listen to each other as they participate in various performance projects; cultivating artistic and critical skills of awareness, perception, sensitivity, reasoning, judgement and communication. Any musical style or repertoire can be brought to the workshop, including original compositions and arrangements. Applied music exam repertoire may not be duplicated in the workshop examination.

RATIONALE: 
This course is designed help students develop instrumental/vocal preparation and performance techniques both as individuals and members of ensembles. The course helps the student develop performance skills, self-expression, stylistic awareness as well as key skills required for collaboration. This course supports the music performance program outcomes and enhances, supports and develops skills and learning that takes place in applied music courses. Both performance workshops at levels 5 and 6 allow for students to explore diverse musical styles, to mix levels and create their own collaborative teams.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
After successfully completing this course students should be able to:
1. demonstrate the ability to prepare and take part in a musical performance.
2. demonstrate awareness, responsiveness and musical communication in collaborative work.
3. examine and discuss one’s own preparation and musical practice and the performance approaches of others.
4. develop program notes in support of performed works.

METHOD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING:
In accordance with the learning and teaching strategy of the college, the following tools are used:
- Individual and group instruction and rehearsal feedback
- In addition to tutor led instructional hours, students are expected to dedicate approximately 6-8 hours in weekly individual practice
- Journal and comparative listening assignments
- Group discussion on performance strategies, performance issues in practice
- Participation in all aspects of ensemble preparation and performance
- Recording or video recording of rehearsals for listening, reflection and discussion
- Office hours: students are encouraged to make full use of their instructor’s office hours
- Use of a learning management system (Blackboard) where instructors post lecture notes, assignment instructions, announcements and additional resources
