DESCRIPTION:
The framework of political action. Separation of powers. Sovereignty and the rule of law. Parliamentary sovereignty and judicial review. Law enactment and law enforcement. Executives and administrators. Technocracy and politics.RATIONALE:
This course is an inquiry into the essential materials of governmental practice in the modern world, serving as a background for more advanced courses in political science.LEARNING OUTCOMES:
As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate understanding of the main political ideologies and movements of modernity.
2. Illustrate problems connected with the complex and varied subjects of politics and government.
3. Demonstrate understanding of the structures and functions of political and legal institutions.
4. Explain the operation of democratic and nondemocratic forms of government.
5. Demonstrate understanding of international politics and organizations.METHOD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING:
In congruence with the teaching and learning strategy of the college, the following tools are used:
- Classes consist of lectures and interactive learning (class discussions on contemporary as well as historical cases).
- Office hours: Students are encouraged to make full use of the office hours of their instructor, where they can discuss the course material.
- Use of a Blackboard site, where instructors can post lecture notes assignment instructions, timely announcements, and additional resources.
- Use of library facilities: Students are encouraged to make use of the library facilities for further study as well as for preparation for the exams.
