Overview
Over view of the major developments and ideas in psychology including: the history of ideas about the mind; key historical and social events that shaped the field; when and how psychology became a science; and how psychological ideas evolved in a historical and cultural context.
RATIONALE:
The module enables Psychology majors to evaluate current debates and appreciate the diverse approaches that shaped psychology as a scientific discipline since its inception. Students deepen their understanding of psychological concepts and their implications with respect to their historical roots.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon completion of this module, the student should be able to:
1. Identify the philosophical origins of the field and distinguish major theories and schools in the history of psychology.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the historical antecedents of psychological perspectives in relation to contemporary issues and the way they provide a framework for current debates.
3. Explore the nature of scientific progress and methods that define psychological research practice.
METHOD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING:

7. Mental illness and its treatment: from animism to DSM
8. Psychological theory and applications in the 21st century
