DESCRIPTION:
The development of European, Asian, and African cultures from their historical origins to 1648. Emphasis on the essential elements in the growth of social institutions.RATIONALE:
A history major requirement, this course offers a synthesis of human achievements from ancient to the beginnings of modern times and thus should prove valuable to any student interested in the human experience.OBJECTIVES:
As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate a general knowledge of Western civilization during ancient and medieval times.
2. Recognize cultural exchange between the peoples who lived around the Mediterranean Sea.
3. Formulate clear ideas concerning historical causation, continuity and sequence, using specific examples.
4. Evaluate the contribution of ancient, medieval and early modern civilizations.
5. Critically interpret social and political events and ideas of great significance, such as the institution of slavery, ancient democracy, chivalry, the Crusades, feudalism, and the rise of the sovereign state.
6. Speculate on the relation of history to the other social sciences and the humanities.LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
