DESCRIPTION:
A survey of Western art from the Palaeolithic through the Medieval periods.RATIONALE:
This course teaches students how to look at art and architectural works, giving them the visual skills to distinguish key elements and different styles, and relate the works to a historical, socio-political, or religious context. It can benefit students from all majors since it enables them to engage productively with art and architecture as a cultural discourse that operates in their own lives.LEARNING OUTCOMES:
As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to:
1. Develop an understanding of the main themes, symbols, and means of expression in various art forms from the Stone Age to the Medieval period through specific examples;
2. Define connections existing in art across cultures and time;
3. Discuss ethical issues pertaining to art;
4. Relate the art produced in different periods and by different cultures to issues of social and political inclusion.METHOD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING:
In congruence with the teaching and learning strategy of the college, the following tools are used: The course will consist of lectures with visuals, discussions, assignments and, if possible, museum or site visits.
