Overview
DESCRIPTION:
The strategic planning process. How firms gain a sustainable competitive advantage from a general management viewpoint, with the role of top manager as strategist for the total enterprise. Ethical and socially responsible decision making. Strategic planning tools and techniques. Integration of knowledge and skills gained from previous business and business-related studies. Students may not receive credit for both MG 4415 and MG 4740 Business Strategy.RATIONALE:
The analysis, formulation and implementation/execution of effective strategy are necessary for the sustainability of organizations in a competitive business environment. This course exposes students to the business tools, techniques and practices used in strategic planning for organizational success. This is necessary knowledge and understanding for anyone who plans to undertake management activities in a business organization. Through the integration of previous knowledge and skills learned in other business courses with strategic planning concepts, practices and principles learned in this course, students will improve their abilities to think strategically, to evaluate situations from diverse and strategic perspectives, and to execute strategy through effective decision-making.LEARNING OUTCOMES:
As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to:
1. Analyze the strategy of a business organization and apply relevant theoretical frameworks of the strategic planning process to a variety of business organizations and industry contexts. (analysis and application)
2. Analyze and assess a range of business problems related to strategic management that any organization in any industry may encounter. (analysis, evaluation)
3. Apply ethical principles and concepts related to social responsibility and sustainable development to business decisions. (application)
4. Relate the major functions of a business and the knowledge gained in other business administration and business-related modules to managing strategy and the strategic planning process. (evaluation)METHOD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING:
In congruence with the teaching and learning strategy of the College, the following tools are used:
• Classes consist of lectures, case studies, experiential exercises, short
reports and in-class discussion of related material. In-class discussion is emphasized.
• Office Hours: Students are encouraged to make full use of the office hours of their instructor in order to consult and discuss issues related to the course content.
• Use of the Blackboard learning platform: in order to enhance the teaching and learning process, instructors may use the site to post their announcements, upload related course material, lecture notes, assignment instructions and additional resources.
