History of Jazz and Blues Music

DESCRIPTION: 
History of the jazz and blues music idioms in the 20th century American music. Examine works and learn about the contributions of selected artists to the development of jazz music.

RATIONALE: 
This introductory course acquaints the student with the concept of improvisation in music and helps differentiate between the diverse styles and forms of each era in Jazz & Blues music.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: 
As a result of taking this course, a student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the historical context of the Jazz and Blues music idioms and be able to discuss the works and contributions of selected artists within the historical and cultural contexts.
2. Examine and discuss fundamental stylistic elements of musical examples in the Blues and the Jazz genres.
3. Aurally identify stylistic elements of studied repertory.

METHODS OF TEACHING AND LEARNING: 
In congruence with the learning and teaching strategy of the College, the following tools are used:
- Class lectures (including listening examples, audio/visual materials and group discussion
- Listening, reading and written exercises assigned as homework which are then reviewed in class
- Concert Attendance (minimum 2 concerts recommended by instructor)
- Office hours: students are encouraged to make full use of the office hours of their instructor, where they can ask questions, see their assigned work results and/or go over lecture material
- Use of a Blackboard site, where instructors post lecture notes, assignment instructions, announcements and additional resources
- The Writing Centre offers academic assistance through individual conferences where experienced tutors assist students with written assignments
