DESCRIPTION:
An introduction to the study of film and television as areas of research within the world of media and communication. An examination of their histories and modes of creation and production.RATIONALE:
This course surveys the fields of film and television as part of the world of media and communications. It introduces the subjects separately but also strives to bridge their study. The skills learned allow students to examine film and television thoroughly and place them within the larger context of entertainment and media studies.LEARNING OUTCOMES:
As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to:
1. Distinguish between the different theoretical models of study of film and television
2. Recognize the history of film and television in the context of their role in the entertainment industry
3. Identify the relevant terminology of the field
4. Recognize the separate but also combined histories of Film and Television
5. Analyse their roles and significance within culture and societyMETHOD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING:
In congruence with the learning and teaching strategy of the college, the following tools are used:
- Class lectures, interactive learning (class discussions, group work).
- Film and Television screenings
- Exercises assigned as homework, the answers of which are reviewed in class.
- Office Hours: Students are encouraged to make full use of the office hours of their instructor, where they can ask questions and go over lecture material.
- Use of a Blackboard site, where instructors post lecture notes, assignment instructions, announcements, and additional resources.
