    DESCRIPTION:
    Nature, functions and responsibilities in the management of organizations. History of management thought, theories, concepts and practices. The managerial functions of planning and decision making, organizing, leading and controlling.

    RATIONALE: 
    To become successful future managers, management students must be prepared to meet the challenges of managing in an organization with a dynamic and rapidly changing business environment, and to excel at what they do. Thus, the student must be familiar with the history of management thought and be knowledgeable about management theories, concepts, functions and practices. In addition to providing the necessary foundation in management, this course also allows students to see how the theoretical concepts of management relate and apply to actual practice at different managerial levels and in a broad range of management settings, be they service, manufacturing, not-for-profit, domestic, global, large or entrepreneurial organizations.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES: 
    As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to:
    1. Describe and discuss the nature of management, traditional and contemporary management challenges, and its environmental context. (knowledge and comprehension)
    2. Describe and explain planning and decision making. (knowledge and comprehension)
    3. Describe and explain organizing and controlling. (knowledge and comprehension)
    4. Describe and explain leading and managing human resources in organizations. (knowledge and comprehension)

    METHOD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING:
    In congruence with the learning and teaching strategy of the college, the following tools are used:
    • Classes consist of lectures, case studies, experiential exercises, and in-class discussion of related material.
    • Office Hours: Students are encouraged to make full use of the office hours of their instructor in order to consult and discuss issues related to the course content.
    • Use of the Blackboard learning platform: in order to enhance the teaching and learning process, instructors may use the site to post their announcements, upload related course material, lecture notes, assignment instructions and additional resources.
