Overview
DESCRIPTION: Overview of the field of psychology as a social science with emphasis on theoretical perspectives and research methods, lifespan development, mental abilities, personality theory and assessment, stress and coping, psychological disorders and treatment, social behaviour.
RATIONALE: Fundamental introductory course for all psychology majors and those interested in psychology as a social science. Along with PS 1000 Psychology as a Natural Science, this course will serve as an overview of the psycho-social underpinnings of behavior and mental processes.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to:
- Compare and contrast different theoretical perspectives in psychology as well as identify basic and applied areas in modern psychology.
- Describe the different scientific methods used in psychology as well as the ethical principles applied in research.
- Describe how the interplay of nature and nurture explains human diversity, with an emphasis on how the environment affects behaviour.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of concepts, major theories, empirical research and applications in developmental psychology, intelligence, and social psychology.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of concepts, major theories, empirical research and applications in personality, stress and health, abnormal behaviour and psychotherapy.
