Studies in Literary Form 1: Poetry

This module will introduce students to methods of reading, analysing, and contextualising poetry at university level. The module will introduce students to formal and thematic elements that need to be considered when approaching the poetic text (rhythm, form, poetic terminology, national/canonical traditions). The second half of the course will demonstrate how one might postulate a poetic tradition; in this case the construction of Irish identity from the eighteenth-century (Jacobite ?aisling? poetry) to the present day (Seamus Heaney).

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:
- The objective of this module is provide learners with an introduction to schools and modes of poetry from different historical periods that will serve as a foundation for advanced modules in the same in Years 2 and 3. Students will be introduced to important poetic forms and genres (including but not limited to the sonnet, blank verse, ballads, free verse & the pastoral).
