Political, economic, social and cultural developments across Europe since the French Revolution.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:
-Appreciate the conflicting concepts of empire and nation, and understand the changing nature of the latter
-Understand the concept of the nation state and explain the challenge it poses to historic and present day supranational polities (empires, European Union)
-Identify, examine, and analyse historical evidence, and organise it in a coherent argument
-Contribute comprehensively to a problem oriented discussion, independently and in group work
-Demonstrate independent judgement based on historical evidence

Teaching & Learning methods:
36 contact hours or equivalent (lectures, seminars, field trips, etc.)

Assessment:
Continuous Assessment: 40%
University scheduled written examination: 60%

Continuous Assessment detail(s): One tutorial essay, total 20%; in-class presentation (oral & written components), total 20%

Penalties: * No late material accepted unless medical or other compelling reasons are established in writing. The expectation is for full attendance by students. Explanation in writing is required in every case of absence from tutorials. The continuous assessment of a candidate who has missed more than 50% of tutorials will not be eligible for assessment under any circumstances.
