German History 1914-1945

This course will encourage students to engage with key historical events and developments in Germany from 1914 to 1945, in part through the medium of German. It will cover such topics as the First World War, the Weimar period, Hitler's rise to power, the persecution of the Jews, and the Second World War. Students will also practice describing pictures, images and events in German.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:
- Summarise in broad terms historical, societal and cultural developments in the German-speaking countries from the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 to the end of the Second World War.
- Describe in some detail some of the main events, themes and debates of this period.
- Identify some of the most important figures of this era and critically evaluate their contribution to unfolding historical and cultural events.
- Describe in German and in some detail pictures, images and posters related to events during this era.
- Organise and structure information in a coherent and meaningful manner in the German language.
- Interpret and explain in English key German terms introduced in the module.
- Write responses to exam questions in English and German, making convincing arguments in a clear and structured manner.
