Overview
This module provides an introduction to the sociology of education, placing particular emphasis when possible on the teaching of Math and Science. Part 1 begins with an overview of the general conceptualisation of education in society. In doing so, the foundations of the sociology of education are considered as well as the key theoretical frameworks which frame this sub-discipline of sociology. Part 2 then moves on to consider educational inequalities in terms of class, gender and race/ethnic minority membership/immigrant status. Here, we consider educational inequalities over time and discuss possible explanations for these inequalities, differentiating between ?cultural? and ?structural? explanations. In doing so, we draw on empirical studies carried out in Ireland and beyond, reflecting a mix of statistical and quantitative sources which document trends and associations as well as qualitative approaches which highlight how class, gender and race/ethnic/immigrant identity plays out in the classroom. Part 3 then places considerable attention on structural explanations for educational inequalities considers the impact of school organisation and process on the educational outcomes of young people, including issues related to ability grouping.
