Pre-colonial Political Structures; Colonization and the Scramble for Africa; Nationalism and Independence; Colonial Legacies, Burdens and Endowments; The State in Africa; Ethnicity and Ethnic Politics; Dependency, Economic Relations and Elite Structures; Religion in Africa; Insurgencies and African Politics; Democracy & Democratization in Africa; Global Health in an African context; Africa in the Global Economy.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

Understand the challenges of state building in Africa; 3.
