Overview
Module Content: The distinction between science and pseudo-science. Fundamental assumptions in psychology. Philosophy of science for psychology: Paradigms and approaches to psychological enquiry. Philosophy of mind. Ethics: Philosophical, psychological and professional issues.
Module Objective: To examine fundamental assumptions in psychological research and psychological science. To explore conceptual issues common to psychology, science and philosophy. To examine ethical issues in research and professional psychology.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:
-Distinguish between science and pseudo-science in the context of psychology;
-Discuss philosophical influences on contemporary psychology;
-Describe key ethical concepts in psychological research and practice;
-Construct an appraisal, informed by the relevant literature, of a current topic involving a conceptual, philosophical or professional issue in psychology.Teaching & Learning methods:
