Overview
This course covers a period in which the central theme is the impact of the Vikings as raiders, invaders and settlers. The Scandinavian background, the motivation of the Vikings in coming west, their interaction, hostile and otherwise, with the Irish and the nature of the sources for all of this are explored. Other strands in Ireland''s secular and ecclesiastical history are also treated, most notably the rise of Munster to unprecedented eminence and the consolidation of Armagh''s primacy.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate critical awareness of the key points of Irish history from the 9th to the 12th century with the focus upon the impact of the Vikings.
