Overview
This module aims to provide a political economic perspective on the welfare state, tailored to social policy students. It will review and build upon students? understanding of key concepts such as efficiency and equity, GDP, taxation, social expenditure, social insurance, welfare, redistribution, inequality, poverty etc., and develop a critical approach to them, locating these concepts in their political context. It will critically explore various options for government intervention in the economy as they apply to the key areas of social policy, such as social welfare, health, housing and education.
