  • Overview

    Students will read a selection of prose fictions from the eighteenth century to the present. The module will introduce students to some key concepts of narrative structure (such as plot and genre) and encourage students to relate these formal issues to the content of the texts they are reading. Students will also be introduced to the history of fiction writing within the Irish and non-Western literary traditions.

    Learning Outcomes:

    On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:
    - Demonstrate a basic awareness of theoretical approaches to the study of fiction
    - Subject a range of fictional texts to a technical or formal analysis
    - llustrate the ability to read fictional texts in context
    - Show a basic understanding of the social, economic, and political forces that shape these contexts
    - Summarise material effectively, synthesise arguments and make clear points in a lucid, grammatical and confident manner
    - Write responses to exam questions, making convincing arguments based on reading primary and secondary texts
    - Write an essay on a chosen topic, making convincing arguments based on reading primary and secondary texts
    - Identify and use relevant subject-specific electronic resources and other library resources

    - Lectures: 20 hours
    - Independent student activities: 60 hours

    Assessment:
    - Continuous Assessment: 50%
    - University scheduled written examination: 50%
