Equine Industries

This is a core module for Animal Science - Equine students and aims to provide an introduction to the many facets of the Equine Industry that exist both in Ireland and on a global scale. Students will learn about the development of the horse in Ireland, its significance for the Irish people and the contribution made by the Equine Industry to Ireland's economy. The module will incorporate field trips to relevant equine-related industries such as sales complexes, stud farms and other facilities, and guest lectures will be given by representatives from equine support organisations. In addition, students will learn about equine industries and organisations outside of Ireland. While the module will focus primarily on the Thoroughbred and Sport Horse industries, alternative breeds and equestrian disciplines of international importance will be explored. The module will include an introduction to opportunity recognition and entrepreneurship in the context of equine industries and will introduce marketing in the equine industy. The module will include a self-directed in-course project requiring students to prepare a written article for the equine media.
