Overview
This module provides an introduction to the biology, ecology, physiology and utilisation of marine plants
and algae. Topics covered include the classification, structure and morphology of seaweeds, seagrasses, and
saltmarsh plants, their reproduction and life histories, distribution, diversity and commercial uses. Fieldwork
will be a component of the module, in which students will focus on the identification and ecology of Irish
wetland and marine botany. Students will gain hands-on experience with the collection and preservation of
marine plants. The importance and utilization of marine algae will be examined by exploring traditional and
current uses, including methods of on-shore and off-shore cultivation, harvesting, product and economic
development, and methods suitable for the sustainable management of natural resources. An introduction to
marine phytoplanktonic organisms, such as cyanophyta, diatoms and dinoflagellates, will also be provided.
