Architectural Design IV

In this module students are introduced to housing design. They begin with an analysis project, encouraging the use of precedents as a critical tool to develop their own work. This forms the introduction to the housing design project which challenges the students to respond to a complex brief and site as well as the issue of how people live and might live in contemporary society. A series of interim submissions encourage the students to test and develop their projects at all scales from how it responds to its context to how each dwelling unit is articulated spatially, structurally and materially. The module includes a study trip to a European city which challenges the students to analyse and respond architecturally to an urban and cultural environment which they are not familiar with, but which they can learn from. Students must complete all projects in this module and attendance during design studio sessions is mandatory. All of the learning outcomes must be adequately demonstrated to pass the module. Each student is required to submit an individual collated and organised physical and digital portfolio of their semester's work including all drawings, models, sketches, etc., which must demonstrate the required learning outcomes.
