  • Overview

    This course explores the relation between realism and the novel in texts ranging from the C18th to the late C19th century, beginning with the intellectual origins of realism. It focuses on the constructed nature of ?reality? and realism as conventions used in fiction, the assumptions on which these conventions rest, and the non-fictional forms of representation which the novel mimics. Writers studied include Defoe, Austen, Dickens, Eliot and Hardy.
