Do A and B:
A. Spanish Literature and Culture: This course is aimed at introducing students to a limited number of key 20th century Spanish literary texts, examining two important Spanish novels from the twentieth century.Set texts: Miguel de Unamuno, San Manuel Bueno, mártir, Cátedra. Miguel Delibes, Los santos inocentes, Santillana/Universidad de Salamanca, 1996.
B. Choose either (i) or (ii):
(i) Modern Spanish Theatre: This course analyses plays by three of the greatest twentieth-century Spanish dramatists.Set texts: Ramón del Valle Inclán Luces de Bohemia F. García Lorca Bodas de sangre A. Buero Vallejo El tragaluz (Espasa Calpe, Madrid, 2006)

(ii) Introduction to Sociolinguistics: The broad aim of these classes is to explore the interrelationship between language and society, and to equip students with a broad working knowledge of key issues in contemporary sociolinguistics. Topics covered in class include the dialect and language dichotomy, language variation and language contact.
Set text: Peter Stockwell, Sociolinguistics: A Resource Book for Students, 2nd edition (2007). Please note, for students taking two languages, you may take the Sociolinguistics option in one language only.
Assessment: Part A: One 2-hour examination and one textual commentary.
Part B: (i) Modern Spanish Theatre - Continuous Assessment.(ii) For Sociolinguistics ? This part of the module is assessed by a continuous assessment exercise (Reflective Commentary). More information will be provided in class.
Parts A and B carry equal marks.
