Overview
This module follows on from the structures modules in 3rd year and the students receive additional lectures on moment distribution in addition to the stiffness method, the concepts associated with shear walls and a brief introduction to the finite element method. Students will also be required to carry out a number of laboratory assignments that are used to illustrate the theoretical concepts from the coursework.
Learning Outcomes
Derive the generalized stiffness equation for a plane frame.
Set-up and apply the stiffness method to analyse plane frames subjected to in-plane forces/moments.
Develop solutions for a number of simple plane frames.
Carry out a dynamic assessment of simple structures and calculate the natural frequency.
Analyse shear walls.
Interpret finite element analyses and results
Evaluate experimental and computational outcomes in relation to theoretical derivations.
Identify experimental error and theoretical approximations.
Recognize the importance of experimental verification of theoretical and semi-theoretical formulae.
Critically analyse experimental results.
Work as a group to produce concise technical reports.
Course Disclaimer
Courses and course hours of instruction are subject to change.
Credits earned vary according to the policies of the students' home institutions. According to ISA policy and possible visa requirements, students must maintain full-time enrollment status, as determined by their home institutions, for the duration of the program.
ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits are converted to semester credits/quarter units differently among U.S. universities. Students should confirm the conversion scale used at their home university when determining credit transfer.
Please reference fall and spring course lists as not all courses are taught during both semesters.
Please note that some courses with locals have recommended prerequisite courses. It is the student's responsibility to consult any recommended prerequisites prior to enrolling in their course.
