  • Overview

Syllabus Outline: Fourier series and Fourier transform. Analysis and design of signal processing systems, passive and active filters. Random signal analysis, energy and power spectral density. Introduction to Digital Signal Processing. Sampling and quantization.

    Learning Outcomes
Calculate the Fourier Series of common periodic waveforms, and hence derive their magnitude and phase spectra.
Explain the properties of the Fourier Transform, and use the Transform to analyse aperiodic signals.
Given a system transfer function, or other system description, characterise the system in terms of its time-domain and frequency-domain behaviour.
Given a desired filter specification, choose an appropriate filter design methodology, and determine the filter transfer function. Implement the filter using passive or active circuits.
Describe common sources of random noise in electronic circuits, and characterise them using statistical measures, and Power Spectral Density. Explain the behaviour of filters when excited with such noise.
Given a discrete-time system description, determine the behaviour of the system.
Calculate the Signal to Quantisation Noise Ratio of data acquisition systems, and use this to determine system parameters. Design appropriate anti-aliasing filters for use with such systems.

Course Disclaimer

Courses and course hours of instruction are subject to change.

Credits earned vary according to the policies of the students' home institutions. According to ISA policy and possible visa requirements, students must maintain full-time enrollment status, as determined by their home institutions, for the duration of the program.

ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits are converted to semester credits/quarter units differently among U.S. universities. Students should confirm the conversion scale used at their home university when determining credit transfer.

Please reference fall and spring course lists as not all courses are taught during both semesters.

Please note that some courses with locals have recommended prerequisite courses. It is the student's responsibility to consult any recommended prerequisites prior to enrolling in their course.
